FORMER CONVENT OF SAN FRANCISCO (RAFAEL COLONEL MUSEUM)

This building in the middle of the XVI century was used as a hospice, later it was occupied by Fray Geronimo de Mendoza establishing the place as the Convent of San Francisco, it was founded in 1567, the missionaries who occupied the Convent had the objective of evangelizing the northern region of the country, however, they see their mission truncated in 1856 by the Law of Nationalization of Ecclesiastical Goods and when the Law came into effect.

There was a need to rescue the building in 1953, although it was not until 1980 that part of the dome, the vault, the sacristy and the presbytery were rescued.

Since 1990, it has housed the Rafael Coronel Museum or known by the inhabitants as the Mask Museum, or as Master Rafael Coronel called it “The Face of Mexico”.
